“Violet Ray”
by Sky Saxon and The Seeds
2004 song
"Violet Ray" sounds something like “Twist And Shout” turned inside-out and dosed with LSD. Credited to Sky Saxon and The Seeds, "Violet Ray" is a forceful song by Sky and a new band from their excellent 2004 LP Red Planet.
As Sky wails about his wish for “no guns, no bombs” these new Seeds engage in rounds of phosphorescent four-chord punk-psych, frequently returning to their single-chord buildup a la “Twist And Shout”. Even for this band, "Violet Ray" is garage-y, with a rickety, right-next-to-you mix. This band is in your face, aurally and spiritually.
Not only does the band soar on this song but Sky finds time to mention his best friends, the dogs of the world, in the lyrics of "Violet Ray". How could anyone ask for more?
