“Million Miles”
by Sky Sunlight Saxon Dragonslayers SSS
1989 song
It’s got more of a sixties vibe than the other songs on the album, but "Million Miles" from 1989’s Just Imagine isn’t looking back all that much. It’s just that the keyboard is so much fun, like a young psych-pop band playing at a dance in 1966. Otherwise it’s a modern rock song, the Dragonslayers band laying out some of their regular professional but inspired rock.
Once again it’s Paul Schofield’s drums that vitalize "Million Miles"; he’s called upon to submit a tireless bap-bap-bap beat and does so elegantly. The bass and guitar add low-mixed chords so Mars Bonfire’s organ can step into center stage with Sky. When the band launches into an unexpected breakdown towards the end the effect is jarring, but no less fun.
"Million Miles" is one of the merrier moments on Just Imagine, showing a different side of the often-dour Dragonslayers. The keyboard riff would show up again in the song "Violet Ray" from Sky’s 2004 album Red Planet, if you haven’t had enough of it yet.
