“Medley: Over-Reaction/Hollywood Blvd.”
by Sky Sunlight Saxon and Fire Wall
1986 song
Destiny’ Children ends with the ambitious “Medley: Over-Reaction/Hollywood Blvd.” As two songs that have been smashed together, it manages a grander impression than either song might have on its own.
“Over-reaction” is a bright and poppy tune tugged along by a radiantly cheerful keyboard part. Sky leeringly pledges “satisfaction” to you, repeatedly, before a sudden and unaccompanied Mars Bonfire keyboard solo, sounding like someone turned the radio to a classical station. When it’s turned back to the sixties station the song morphs imperceptibly into “Hollywood Blvd”, which is fine but seems to go on a little too long. The saving grace is the excellent drumming and the lovely guitar work. "Medley: Over-Reaction/Hollywood Blvd."
Psychedelic, rhythmic, and addled in its echoing way (Sky seems unsure of the chord changes but ploughs ahead anyway – as he should), the long medley jam is a great way to end an LP of groovy misfit anthems and outré garage detours.
