“(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone”
by Sky Sunlight Saxon
2008 song
The cute foursome may have been a pre-fab teen-TV group but The Monkees hit undeniable gold with the great garage-rock thrust of "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" – and Sky Sunlight Saxon covered the perennial favorite in 2008. Sky’s final album, The King Of Garage Rock, was chock full of new covers of 1960s nuggets and "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" definitely fit the bill.
The song always had an undeniable propulsion in its fevered verses, a barely-contained chaos during the choruses, and Sky and his superb band do it all justice. It’s a tribute to Sky that he could bring together The Monkees on this track and Iggy Pop on "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and even The Beatles’ relatively staid "Love Me Do" and makes them all comfortable psych-punk bedfellows. Buy The King Of Garage Rock for its great moments like "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone".
