“Have Love Will Travel”
by Sky Sunlight Saxon
2007 song
“WHOA! Rock and roll!” bellows Sky Saxon at the outset of his recording of "Have Love Will Travel". He sounds like a wise-cum-crazy mountain mystic walking into a seance and tripping over a door jamb. The song appears on the 2008 CD and LP The King Of Garage Rock but it was first heard on a limited-edition pink vinyl 7″ EP released in 2007 (along with a new recording of "Pushin' Too Hard" and Them’s "Gloria").
Several artists had done their own versions of "Have Love Will Travel" but Sky’s is likely based on the same one that everyone else’s is, the beloved 1965 version by The Sonics. "Have Love Will Travel" in fact dates from 1959 and the pen of Richard Berry, author of “Louie Louie”.
The guitar riff is sublime, Sky’s vocals (mm-hmm!) are a riot, and the band is absolutely cooking. Highly recommended.
Minor detail: On the album there is no comma in the song title, but on the 7″ there is: “Have Love, Will Travel”. You’ve been warned.
