“God Rap”
by Sunlight Rainbow Stars New Seeds
1977 song
On the 1977 live album Heavenly Earth, recorded at a small Hollywood club, an audience member yells at Sky Saxon to cut off his long hippie beard. Sky, defiant ’til the end, responds in his “mumbling punk” manner. Reflecting upon the altercation later he was so pleased that not only did he keep the brief altercation on the album but he made sure it was listed as a separate track: it’s the third on Side 1.
On "God Rap", as he named it, Sky refuses to cut his beard, says anecdotally that he was once offered a large sum of money to do so and refused that too, and advises everyone against cutting their hair since the stringy stuff is a gift from god. Rap on, my brother.
