“Did He Die”
by The Seeds
1970 song
The terrifying "Did He Die" is one of the best moments of Sky Saxon’s entire career. The song briefly appeared on a promo 7″ in 1970, The Seeds’ second and final release for MGM who dropped the band shortly thereafter. An impassioned Sky wails ferociously about torture on the hill and the needless deaths of “how many good men?” Stinging guitar leads the manic music behind him, as if the band itself were charging up the hill to defend the rights of the innocent.
The B-side of "Did He Die" was the far more bucolic "Love In A Summer Basket". Both songs, which could reasonably be considered the last true Seeds songs, were recorded on October 26, 1970 in Los Angeles. While copies of the original record are hard to find and a bit pricey, both excellent songs have been included on compilations over the years for those without the patience or the funds to track down the great-sounding original vinyl.
