“Coo Coo”
by Sky Saxon and The Seeds
2004 song
Sky Saxon’s 2004 comeback album Red Planet featured the great garage rock song "Coo Coo". Credited to The Seeds but featuring an all-new band, "Coo Coo" finds Sky in a combative mood. Sky explored the themes near and dear to his heart over the years, often repetitiously, but mockery was rarely his stance. On "Coo Coo", though, he is just too disgusted with the hapless title character to restrain himself.
It’s rare to hear Sky curse, but we get to on "Coo Coo". Poor Mr. Coo is “really in deep shit” – and, added to that, he “can’t get no erection”. Poor bastard. Sky even ups the ante by cooing like a bird on the break, a cruel version of his dog-barking from the 1980s-era Fire Wall recordings.
The music on "Coo Coo" is another gift from the garage gods, manna from maniac heaven. A simple fuzz guitar riff, embellishment by 1960s-ish keyboards, deft bashing of the drum kit; this band’s formula just flat-out worked and worked. Here, it works yet again.
