“Pushin’ Too Hard” / “Try To Understand”

by The Seeds featuring Sky Saxon
1966 7-inch single from Australia
Label: Vocalion [V-1016]

This is the official Australian version of The Seeds’ most popular single, "Pushin' Too Hard" b/w "Try To Understand". It’s on the Vocalion label. No date is printed on the label but information on the internet suggests it was released in 1966, which would make sense.

Australia is proudly mentioned several times on the label – “Made and distributed in Australia by E.M.I. (Australia) Limited”, plus a rubber stamp-looking logo for M C P S Sydney, the U.K.’s Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society’s Sydney office.

The record’s catalog number is V-1016 but there are other more complicated numbers on both sides: "Pushin' Too Hard" has 45-N3165 and 7XDEC998, while "Try To Understand" has 45-N3220 and 7XDEC999. These numbers are also etched into the run-out vinyl on their respective sides.

Each song is referred to as “a GNP CRESCENDO recording”, while as always Sky Saxon gets lots of credit for himself personally: the sole writer of both sides, he also is listed under the artist credit “The Seeds featuring Sky Saxon”, and on the B-side (but not the A) he gets a producer credit along with Jimmy Maddin.

This is yet another interesting non-U.S. collectible Seeds record featuring "Pushin' Too Hard"; as the band’s most notable song there were quite a few.
