“Cry Wolf”
by The Sky Saxon Blues Band
1967 song
A lengthy hard blues workout, "Cry Wolf" is one of many such songs on the 1967 album A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues credited to The Seeds’ alter-ego The Sky Saxon Blues Band. Besides the four principals the recording features Norman “Cooker” Desrosiers on second guitar, fifth Seed Harvey Sharpe on bass, and George Smith on harmonica.
"Cry Wolf", one of the earliest (if coincidental) Sky Saxon references to canines whom he would soon come to worship as gods on Earth, was captured on tape at the very first session for the blues album, on August 12, 1966. Five takes were attempted; the album version is the intro from take 4 and the rest from take 5. At over six minutes "Cry Wolf" sees The Seeds and their guests making the most of the chance to stretch out and do something besides their sweaty garage-rock punk nuggets for a change. They all seem to be enjoying themselves, and the guitar is stellar. (It is unknown whether George Smith was present at this session or if he overdubbed the harmonica at a later date.)
This initial recording session for A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues also saw the band do a song called “Black Widow”, a number that remains aggravatingly unreleased.
