“24 Hour Rocker”
by Sky Sunlight Saxon and The Stars New Seeds Band
1984 song
Released on the clear-vinyl mini-LP Starry Ride of 1984, "24 Hour Rocker" is a nine-minute jam mostly on a single chord from Rainbow Starburst. It’s full of muscly drumming and Sky Saxon’s crazed ranting. The drummer on "24 Hour Rocker" may be Ron Bushy of Iron Butterfly; the credits on the record are vague and the songs likely date from different times with different personnel.
The musicians explore that one chord with an admirable sense of inquisitiveness, and "24 Hour Rocker" morphs from one riff to another without ever leaving its chosen rut. If you can pick out what Sky is mumbling and yelling about during this performance then more power to you. His singing goes a long way to establishing the feel of the song but clear-minded poetry it is not. And isn’t that really the point of a long psychedelic jam like this?
