“Sweet Fragrant Melodies”
by Sky Saxon and The Seeds
2004 song
Sluggish and druggy and charming, "Sweet Fragrant Melodies" is a Sky Saxon song that lives up to its title. Relaxed and psychedelic, "Sweet Fragrant Melodies" is indeed a satisfying confection, candy for the psych/garage set.
The song follows a typical I-IV-V chord pattern, sounding like “Please Do Not Go” by Violent Femmes played by mushroom-crazed musicians who live in a VW bus on the beach. Backing vocals from these so-called Seeds (not the original guys) underscore the similarity while also making "Sweet Fragrant Melodies" even friendlier than it already is.
Sky Saxon’s lyrics are a tribute to a girl who seems to exude springtime scents and beautiful music when she walks into a room, instantly breaking Sky’s heart. It’s corny but Sky never minded that – his goony conviction sells it.
"Sweet Fragrant Melodies" is on the 2004 album Red Planet.
