A Faded Picture
by The Seeds
1991 album
A Faded Picture is a 1991 CD compilation of lesser-known Seeds songs from the 1960s. It takes its name from the wonderfully psychedelic song "A Faded Picture" from the 1966 A Web Of Sound album. A Faded Picture is an interesting collection of songs but contains nothing new or unreleased… and anyway, it’s out of print. It was released on Drop Out Records, who also distributed the 1988 compilation Evil Hoodoo, though some sources list the label as Demon or Diablo.
The tracks on A Faded Picture come exclusively from The Seeds’ first three albums, plus the non-LP b-side of their first single (the Little Richard-on-speed "Daisy Mae"). Where the 1988’s Evil Hoodoo featured fast punk rave-ups, almost entirely bypassing The Seeds’ more psychedelic moments, A Faded Picture does the opposite: it’s full of psychedelia from 1966’s A Web Of Sound ("A Faded Picture") and 1967’s Future ("Where Is The Entrance Way To Play", the delirious "Fallin'"), besides some of the faster garage rock songs scattered throughout the band’s work (including "Nobody Spoil My Fun" and "No Escape", both from The Seeds, and the great "Pushin' Too Hard" rewrite "A Thousand Shadows"). Also included is the infamous 14-minute sweaty workout "Up In Her Room" (from Web), which appeared on Evil Hoodoo severely edited down.
Because A Faded Picture fills in some of the gaps left off of Evil Hoodoo, it makes a good companion piece to that earlier compilation album; together the two tell a more complete (but still lacking) story of The Seeds. At any rate, both collections are now out of print; they can be found pretty easily from online vendors, but anyone going to that length may just want to opt for buying all the original, in-print Seeds albums. If you see a copy of A Faded Picture for a decent price, though, it’s worth picking up, especially if you are fairly new to the band or want to introduce them to a psych-loving Seeds virgin.
Cover art
The cover art is very similar to the 1987 album Takes & Glories, using the same photo of the 1960s band members lurking around a seedy-looking part of town, but the two albums are not related.
